THE Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has donated boarder surveillance and control equipment to Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).

JICA’s Chief Representative, Yamamura Naofumi, handed over the equipment in Dar es Salaam.

The equipment include one X-ray baggage scanner, one patrol boat, three portable raman spectrometers, three patrol vehicles and ten  field test kits.

The donation is part of the grant aid project for the border surveillance and control equipment, which Tanzania signed with the JICA in 2019 for further promoting regional economic development through trade facilitation and ensured border control in East Africa.

“The handed-over equipment are expected to contribute to national security and safety of borders as well as regional trade promotion,” Naofumi stated during the handing over ceremony.

He said the equipment would facilitate trade in the East African region, which includes Technical Cooperation for capacity enhancement of Revenue Authorities.

The provision of the equipment is in line with JICA’s cooperation for regional trade facilitation in the East African region, which includes Technical Cooperation for capacity enhancement of Revenue Authorities since the year 2007, Grant Aid for Rusumo International Bridge and One Stop Border Post (OSBPs) construction in 2016, and ODA Loan for Construction for Arusha- Namanga-Athi River Road and OSBP Facilities at Namanga in 2018.

TRA Commissioner General, Alphayo Kidata, stated that Tanzania’s government appreciates the technical support from JCIA which complements TRA’s effort on improving trade.

“I have been informed that since November, 2019 the government of Japan through JICA agreed to implement project known as the capacity Development on Trade Facilitation and Border Control in East Africa with funding amounting to 3.2 million US dollars," he said

Meanwhile, Tanzania has a strong relationship with Japan through the JCIA which provides huge assistance through a various means including: technical assistance, concessional loans, and bringing young volunteers from Japan to volunteer in Tanzania.

The JICA also helps in the improving of transport sectors through the construction of infrastructures to boost the country’s economy and reduce poverty.
