Samia extols Serengeti Girls

PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has urged the Under 17 National Football team (Serengeti Girls) to perform well in the World Cup finals scheduled to take part in India in October.

Samia said this during the official ceremony to congratulate Serengeti Girls for qualifying for the World Cup finals in India in October this year at the State House in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.

“While we congratulate you for your remarkable achievement it is important to understand that you have a big task ahead of you and that is to perform well in the finals in India to proudly carry the nation's flag,” said Samia.

Samia told the team not to fear their opponents and should not consider themselves inferior to those they face as are the most feared teams in the world.

Serengeti girls have already shown how mighty they are by knocking out African giants like Cameroon.

“We will be among sixteen teams that have qualified for the tournament out of 195 teams. We will be playing the finals alongside Morocco and Nigeria and in the process, we eliminated Cameroon who is among the African giants.

You don’t need to fear them no matter how big they are as they are only big names not necessarily to be that way on the pitch,” she said.

President Samia has assured Serengeti Girls  a full government support and called on the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports to cooperate with Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) to make sure the team drill well.

“The government will fully support the girls and I will direct the Prime Minister to organise fundraising for both of our teams, Serengeti Girls and National Amputee Football Team(Tembo Warriors).

I will also participate in the contribution,” said Samia.

The Head of State added that Serengeti Girls and Tembo Warriors deserve all the praise as they are the first football teams to qualify for the World Cup since independence.

“They deserve all the praise as they are the first football teams since the country's independence,” said Samia.

President Samia also congratulated Young Africans for clinching the NBC Premier League trophy alongside other country’s representatives in next season's inter clubs competition she tasked them to perform well in the forthcoming competition.

“I encourage the clubs representing our country in an inter-club competition to perform well; doing so will bring us pride in the world football map,” said Samia.

Samia reiterated her promise to build major sports and arts arenas in Dodoma and Dar es Salaam.
