Cellular users to benefit from digital broadcasts

The Minister for Communications, Science and Technology, Prof Makame Mbarawa, told reporters in Dares Salaam on Thursday that the transition to digital from analogue broadcasting will be of more economic benefits which include rapid growth of the revolutionarised communication industry.

He mentioned other benefits as the increase of television channels, broadcasting quality, government revenue, as well as increase of extra broadcasting frequencies as a result of abandoning analogue technology. “The industry will also expect drastic boom of telecommunications service providers while television broadcasting will be available via many communications devises like mobile phones and computers,” he said.

Prof Mbarawa said people need to sensitized to shift to digital broadcasting but also gave assurances that people with analogue television sets will also enjoy the new technology provided they are connected to special digital decoders. He said the decision by East African states to phase out analogue broadcasting by 31 March this year won’t be reversed and commended subscribers who have already moved to the new system.

The minister also reminded of the benefits broadcasters can gain if they utilize the national fiber cable network for effective transmissions. He allayed fears that costs for digital television sets and decoders will be too high, noting that findings show that costs of such appliances are slowly going down.

He, however, reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure that decoders are sold at affordable prices. “The ministry and Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) will make sure the switch takes place without causing havoc to consumers and the general public,” he stressed.
