State appeals for more aid to SMEs projects

The Minister for Industry and Trade, Dr Abdallah Kigoda made the call in Dar es Salaam  at the launch of the United Nations Volunteers project support aimed at strengthening the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (TCCIA) to be able to support business innovations.

“We need more efforts and support to help SMEs improve the way they conduct their businesses…most of them require support for innovation in technology and with support from other partners they can do better in  the market,” he said.In the speech read on his behalf by the Director of SMEs in the ministry, Dr Consolate Inshebabi, the minister mentioned other challenges as unfavourable regulatory framework, lack of business skills, marketing and use of information technology.

Basing on the project, Dr Kigoda said the project would enhance capacity for improved entrepreneurship and help TCCIA in developing SMEs data base and improve market development.The Minister thanked the UN and other development partners supporting SMEs, calling on other partners to join hands and supplement the government’s efforts in supporting SMEs.

On the other hand, UNDP Deputy Country Director, Mr Titus Osundina said the project that cost 400,000 US dollars (about 600m/-) was designed to support the government’s vision in reducing poverty through increased access to sustainable income opportunities.“There is need for capacity building programmes and training to boost the competitive edge of SMEs to become big companies towards gross domestic product,” he said.
